In a campaign that was bigger and better than ever, this year, TJX Europe once again supported Comic Relief’s "Red Nose Day.” While we have been supporting the campaign for 13 years, 2017 is the seventh time TK Maxx UK has been the official Red Nose Day T-shirt retailer and the third time HomeSense has been an official Red Nose Day partner.
Each year, we challenge ourselves to raise as much as possible, whether it’s through the Red Nose Day merchandise we sell or through our own Associate fundraising, and this year one group of 18 Associates took our challenge to new heights…literally! They took on a six day challenge to climb to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro – the highest mountain in Africa. The first three days took the group from the rain forest, through the desert, and up into the clouds to 4,720 meters, where they reached base camp at Kibo Hut. It took them another 25 hours to reach the summit in challenging conditions.
Laura Hetherington, Trip Leader, recalled the moment they reached the top, remembering the feeling as “relief, excitement, achievement, overwhelming!”
Many more TJX Associates came together across the U.K. to raise a phenomenal amount of money for this incredible cause. We saw a vast array of fundraising activity, including bake sales, quizzes, cabarets, football and netball tournaments, dancing, and much, much more. We are so proud of the effort and personal time our Associates put into these events to make them remarkable!
In addition to our Associate fundraising, TK Maxx sold limited edition T-shirts created by a renowned fashion and portrait photographer. The T-shirts were wholly manufactured in Africa and made with Fairtrade cotton sourced from certified co-operatives in Uganda, which means a fairer price for the farmers. TK Maxx and HomeSense also sold a range of homewares including aprons, tea towels, a recycled leather journal and a color-in notebook. As always, the campaign was supported by a host of well-known celebrities and even featured the children of many TJX Europe Associates modelling our children's range of clothing all to promote the effort!
The efforts of our Associates combined with the sales of merchandise and generosity of our customers helped us to raise over £4 million for Comic Relief! This means that since 2004 TJX Europe has raised over £21 million for this charity, making a huge impact on countless lives of people in the U.K. and some of the world’s poorest communities.
In Europe, our community programs aim to help vulnerable children and young people achieve their potential.
