The TJX Canada team has a long history of supporting Covenant House Toronto, an organization that advocates for homeless young people by providing them with housing and support services. In addition to making donations to Covenant House, our Associates enthusiastically volunteer their time throughout the year at Canada's largest youth shelter to help serve food, stock supplies and participate in programs.
With an estimated 35,000 youth struggling to find stable housing in Toronto, Covenant House needs increasing financial support to help meet the city's needs1. To bring awareness to this important cause, TJX Canada's President, Doug Mizzi, and SVP of Planning, Mark Heitin, were among 70 other top business and community leaders from the Greater Toronto Area who grabbed their sleeping bags and a cardboard "mattresses" one cold night in November to participate in the fifth annual Covenant House Executive Sleep Out.
"By participating in this event, I did my small part to make sure the doors stay open for all who need them," said Doug Mizzi, whose participation this past November marked his second Sleep Out. "I was happy to support the cause, but the event also gave me first-hand experience with the great work that Covenant House does. I was able to meet the Covenant House team and some of their clients, which really underscored the importance and value of the support TJX Canada provides."
The group raised more than $1 million for the cause for the fifth year in a row. As importantly, they raised awareness of the high number of homeless youth in the city and their struggles. The Toronto effort was part of an international event that happened simultaneously at 15 other Covenant House sites across Canada and the U.S.
