Consider this: On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States, totaling more than 10 million people every year.1 In Canada, spousal violence has been consistently identified as one of the most common forms of violence against women.2
Domestic violence impacts women, men, and children of every age, race, culture, sexual orientation, gender, and socio-economic status. That's why, for over 20 years, TJX has supported domestic violence prevention efforts at organizations that promote the health of families and children. With October and November dedicated to raising awareness about domestic violence in the U.S. and Canada, respectively, here's what we're doing to help:
In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, in every state where we have stores, The TJX Foundation donated to local organizations that focus on preventing domestic violence and assisting victims and their families. But our support for local organizations didn't end on October 31.
Throughout the year, our distribution centers, stores, and global headquarters support local organizations with grants from The TJX Foundation - organizations such as Safe Passage in North Carolina, an emergency shelter that also provides counseling, education, support groups, and parenting classes; womenshelters.org in Georgia, which provides listings of emergency shelters, transitional housing, family shelters, residential treatment centers, and other residential services for women; and The Network in Connecticut, which assists families and individuals who have experienced domestic and intimate partner violence, educates to promote healthy relationships, and advocates for safer communities.
In addition to our support of organizations in our communities, we also have a long history of working with the National Domestic Violence Hotline, a free, 24/7 helpline that supports victims and family members throughout the country. Since 2009, donations from The TJX Foundation, our brands, and our customers have helped enable staff at The Hotline to answer over 1.4 million calls and chats from people in need.
Working with The Hotline and to support education among our Associates and customers on this important issue, in 2010, we launched the "Love Is" pocket card campaign. This palm card, available in our U.S. offices, gives critical information about domestic abuse and ways to get help.
"Domestic violence is a huge issue in the United States, yet corporate support is surprisingly low for the cause," said Kristin Campbell, Chief Development Officer at the National Domestic Violence Hotline. "TJX's tremendous leadership and commitment to help end domestic violence is a model we hope inspires other corporations."

November is Woman Abuse Prevention Month in Canada. Through a combination of direct donation and in-store fundraising with the help of Associates and customers, Winners and HomeSense have supported the Canadian Women's Foundation for over 10 years. Ranked as one of the 10 largest women's foundations in the world, the Canadian Women's Foundation empowers women and girls in Canada to move out of violence, out of poverty, and into confidence and leadership. Since 1991, the Foundation has invested in over 1,400 community programs, helping 250,000 people across Canada.
Twice a year, Winners and HomeSense bring out a unique product line to raise funds for the Canadian Women's Foundation. The product line, currently named "Shop for GEN1," comes out in the spring and fall. Proceeds from the product sales benefit over 450 emergency shelters as well as violence prevention programs funded by the Foundation.
