Letter from Head of TJX – Europe and President, TK Maxx

March 30, 2007

To our valued customers:

As head of TJX’s European operations, I want our customers to know how much I personally regret any concerns you may have as a result of recent press reports concerning the unauthorised intrusion into our computer systems. We announced in January 2007 that we suspected that information from credit and debit card transactions at T.K. Maxx had been stolen in the intrusion at our parent company in the U.S. I regret to report that we have just confirmed our suspicions.

We truly regret that this has happened. But we want you to know these facts:

  • No T.K. Maxx data was included in the data that we believe was stolen relative to approximately 45.7 million payment cards used in transactions in North America.

  • Personal identification numbers (PINs) were not compromised in the intrusion at T.K. Maxx. We do not store PINs at T.K. Maxx, and they are encrypted when entered at the PIN pad in the store.

We believe customers should feel safe shopping at T.K. Maxx. We are fortunate that a number of years ago, the payment card industry in the U.K. and Ireland began the transition to "chip and pin" technology for payment cards, which we believe provides an added measure of security for our customers.

Since we learned of the possible theft of customer data from T.K. Maxx, we have provided extensive information requested by the payment card companies and banks with which we work, and we have been in ongoing communication with them. We are working with leading computer security firms and have strengthened our computer security to protect our customers’ data. We are cooperating with all relevant authorities. We are providing customer helplines and making information available to customers here on our website.

We truly regret that this has happened. Our utmost priority is our customer and we really value the trust you place in us.

Respectfully,

Paul Sweetenham
Head of TJX - Europe
President, TK Maxx
