Letter from Head of TJX Europe and President, T.K. Maxx

August 11, 2008

To Our Valued Customers:

As head of TJX’s European operations, I want you to know that our first priority always has been, and continues to be, our customers. I personally regret any concerns you may have had as a result of the sophisticated criminal attack(s) on TJX's computer system announced in January 2007.

We are pleased that charges have been brought against the individuals allegedly responsible for the TJX computer intrusion(s), as well as breaches at many other major U.S. retailers. Since first learning of the intrusion(s), we have worked very closely with law enforcement authorities as they conducted an extensive international investigation of this complex crime. We are thankful that law enforcement has made the investigation and prosecution of cyber crime a top priority.

We truly regret that the intrusion(s) happened. But we want you to know these facts:

  • No T.K. Maxx customer payment card data were included in the data that we believe was stolen relative to approximately 45.7 million payment cards used in transactions in North America.

  • Personal identification numbers (PINs) were not compromised in the intrusion at T.K. Maxx. We do not store PINs at T.K. Maxx, and they are encrypted when entered at the PIN pad in the store.

We believe customers should feel safe shopping at T.K. Maxx and remain committed to providing a secure environment as you shop for great fashion, brands and values. We are fortunate that a number of years ago, the payment card industry in the U.K., Ireland and Germany began the transition to chip and PIN technology for payment cards, which we believe provides added security for our customers. T.K. Maxx uses chip and PIN technology in all of its stores. In addition, TJX has worked diligently with some of the world’s leading computer security firms to further enhance computer security for its customers world-wide. We continue to provide customer helplines and make information available to customers here on our website.

We truly regret the criminal attack(s) on TJX’s computer system. Again, our utmost priority is our customer, and we really value the trust you place in us.

Respectfully,

Paul Sweetenham
Head of TJX Europe
President, T.K. Maxx
